Health Information Technology degrees are something of a newcomer on the academic scene. Qualifications in this area have only been needed since the introduction of computerized records in hospitals and medical facilities; previously, only a good secretary would have been needed to take care of filing all the paper records.

Students of a Health IT degree have many more options after graduating than just taking up a position maintaining an elaborate filing system; many graduates also go into the development side of the industry, creating new hardware and software to make keeping medical records not only easier, but also more secure.

There are also options when it comes to choosing where to study. As expected from a discipline that relies heavily on a knowledge of information technology, online courses are very popular while a number of colleges are also starting to teach Health Information Technology degrees too.

As the student progresses through the course, they will be introduced not only to core skills and techniques, but also to the many different ways that these can be applied within a hospital. Graduates who started their online Health Information Technology degree thinking they wanted to follow one career path may find themselves tempted by a profession they did not know existed until they started studying.

One of those career options is to work as a health information technician, a job who would suit someone who enjoys the analytical side of IT, as they would spend a lot of time reviewing data collected from patients and compiling reports of the performance of the medical facility. Students who find they prefer to stay holed up in an office and have limited contact with the patients themselves would enjoy this job.

On the other hand, medical secretaries will spend a lot of their time dealing with enquiries from patients, via the telephone, letters and even email. Although medical secretaries in the past did not need to have a college degree or any specific qualifications, the way the job has changed beyond all recognition in the last ten years means that experience in IT is essential; part of the role is to use various software packages to make appointments, arrange for tests, keep records up-to-date and secure as well as being a pleasant people-person.

Some students excel at the business aspects of their online Health Information Technology degree, and these graduates also have several options when it comes to applying for their first job in the industry. A medical coder’s tasks are quite similar to those performed by a health information technician except that instead of just assessing performance and standards, the medical coder would also look into the financial implications of any of their findings.

Many students start off in one of these three positions, though there are a lot of opportunities for developing a career path as you get older. Many of the current managers of hospitals, care homes and other medical facilities started out in jobs like these, and they now have the responsibility for huge budgets as well as the health and well-being of hundreds of patients.
